Exail to Supply ModBox-FE System for LLNL Jupiter Laser Facility

R&D Breakthrough

Exail has announced that it has signed a contract with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California to provide multiple ModBox-FE systems for sub-nanosecond pulse generationat the Jupiter Laser Facility (JLF). This latest deployment marks the 60th ModBox Front-End system delivered by Exail to enhance temporal pulse shaping for high-energy laser facilities worldwide.

“With the ModBox FE, users of the JLF will be able to generate laser pulses with any kind of temporal shape.” said Yves Deiss, NORAM Photonics Sales Director at Exail. “Exail’s ModBox-FE will offer accurate control of the sub-ns pulse shapes with high vertical resolution. It is a crucial seeder to optimize the performance of a high-energy laser facility to ensure the generation of repeatable and reliable Near-Infra-Red optical pulses.”

The Jupiter Laser Facility is a mid-scale high-power laser research center at LLNL and part of LaserNetUS, a consortium of leading laser facilities across North America. Designed to support fundamental plasma physics, high-energy-density science, and laser-driven fusion research, JLF offers flexible laser, target, and diagnostic configurations for experimental development.

JLF houses three target areas, combining kilojoule-class long pulses and short pulses, all of which will be equipped with Exail’s advanced laser shaping solutions to expand the facility’s operational flexibility.

Exail’s ModBox-FE and ModBox-SB (Spectral Broadening) systems provide state-of-the-art laser pulse shaping capabilities, supporting precision control over laser-driven compression experiments. The facility has played a key role in diagnostic developments for the National Ignition Facility (NIF), LLNL’s flagship laser facility, and will continue to drive advancements in high-energy-density science and inertial confinement fusion.
